RBT requirements in Missouri

Missouri issues no state credential for behavior technicians. The law lists who may practice ABA (licensed behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts, supervised trainees and licensed psychologists) without naming technicians, and neither the statute nor the board's rules have a technician exemption or technician supervision rule.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Missouri has no state credential for behavior technicians; Section 337.315 RSMo licenses behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts, plus provisional and temporary licenses.
  • Section 337.315.7 says no person may practice ABA unless they are in one of eight listed categories (licensed, provisional or temporary behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts, supervised trainees gaining field experience, or licensed psychologists); technicians are not named.
  • Section 337.315.8 lets any licensed or certified professional practice components of ABA within their scope of practice and ethical guidelines, and 337.315.11 exempts IDEA and Section 504 service providers and enrolled students.
  • The Board's rules (20 CSR 2063) do not mention technicians: the supervision rule (5.005) covers only assistant behavior analysts, and the standards of practice (6.005) have no technician, paraprofessional or delegation provision.
  • A proposed amendment to 20 CSR 2063-5.005, filed May 27, 2026, would extend the supervision rule to provisionally licensed analysts only.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Missouri, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
