B. Behavior Assessment
8 of the 75 scored questions on the RBT exam (11%), across 3 tasks. Each task below has a study page with definitions, worked examples, common mistakes and practice questions.
The 3 tasks
- B.1 Preference assessmentsA preference assessment is a structured way to find out which items, foods, activities, or social interactions a client prefers, so the supervisor can choose likely reinforcers for teaching and behavior plans. RBTs run these assessments by following the supervisor's protocol exactly, recording the client's choices or engagement, and summarizing the results. Preference shows what a client chooses; it does not by itself prove an item will reinforce behavior.56 questions
- B.2 Skill assessmentsSkills assessments show what a client can already do and what they still need to learn. The supervisor chooses the assessment, interprets the results and writes the goals. The RBT helps by preparing, presenting items exactly as instructed, recording responses accurately, running planned role-plays and helping summarize the data.55 questions
- B.3 Functional assessmentFunctional assessment identifies why a problem behavior happens: what sets it off and what consequence keeps it going. The supervisor designs the assessment and interprets it. The RBT takes part by collecting ABC and other descriptive data, carrying out functional analysis conditions exactly as written and reporting anything that might affect the results.55 questions
