The rules that affect RBTs
- Montana has no state credential for behavior technicians.
- MCA 37-17-404(4): "A behavior technician who is supervised by a behavior analyst licensed under this part is exempted from having a license under this part."
- MCA 37-17-405(2) requires a behavior technician doing ABA to be supervised by a Montana-licensed behavior analyst or by a licensed psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in behavioral and cognitive psychology.
- Montana's license protects titles: MCA 37-17-403(1) bars only representing oneself as a behavior analyst or assistant behavior analyst without a license.
- Behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts are licensed by the Montana Board of Psychologists (Department of Labor and Industry).
BACB requirements apply everywhere
Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Montana, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
