RBT requirements in Louisiana

Louisiana is one of the few states with its own technician credential: the Registered Line Technician (RLT), issued by the Louisiana Behavior Analyst Board. Your supervising licensed behavior analyst registers you, pays the $50 fee, and renews the registration each year, and you need a state criminal background check. The BACB RBT is not required for the RLT, and Louisiana sets its own monthly supervision minimums.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Credential: Registered Line Technician (RLT), issued by the Louisiana Behavior Analyst Board; no one may hold themselves out as a registered line technician without registering (R.S. 37:3705).
  • Requirements: at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent (R.S. 37:3708(A)); the statute and the Board's registration application do not require the BACB RBT.
  • The supervising Louisiana licensed behavior analyst registers the technician on the Board's form with the $50 fee; registration is per supervisory relationship and is renewed annually by the supervisor (R.S. 37:3708; LAC 46:VIII.304).
  • A criminal background check through the Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information must be started within 14 days of the application; the IdentoGO check is a separate cost (R.S. 37:3708(C)).
  • If the supervisory relationship ends, both the supervisor and the technician must notify the Board in writing within 10 calendar days (LAC 46:VIII.304(C)).
  • Supervision: at least 5% of the RLT's ABA service hours each month, with at least two face-to-face contacts a month, one of which includes observing the RLT providing services; remote supervision needs two-way audio and video (LAC 46:VIII.511).
  • The supervising LBA may delegate supervision to a state-certified assistant behavior analyst (SCaBA) or another LBA but remains responsible (LAC 46:VIII.511; Board Opinion #004, January 14, 2026).
  • The Behavior Analyst Practice Act (R.S. 37:3701 et seq.) has a termination date of July 1, 2028 (R.S. 37:3718).

Registered Line Technician (RLT): requirements

  • No person may hold themselves out as a registered line technician unless registered under the Behavior Analyst Practice Act (R.S. 37:3705).
  • At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent (R.S. 37:3708(A)).
  • Registered with the Board by the supervising Louisiana licensed behavior analyst, on the Board's form with the fee; registration is per supervisory relationship (R.S. 37:3708(B); LAC 46:VIII.304(A)).
  • Criminal background check through the Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information, initiated within 14 days of the application (R.S. 37:3708(C); LAC 46:VIII.304(B)).
  • Registration is renewed annually by the supervising licensed behavior analyst (R.S. 37:3708(E)).
  • If the supervisory relationship ends, both the LBA and the technician must notify the Board in writing within 10 calendar days (LAC 46:VIII.304(C)).
  • Neither the statute nor the Board's registration application reviewed requires the BACB RBT credential.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Louisiana, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
