RBT requirements in Kentucky

Kentucky does not license behavior technicians. The law bars practicing or assisting in ABA without a license, but it exempts supervisees, meaning unlicensed people who work under the extended authority and direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst, which covers RBTs working under their supervisor.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Kentucky has no state credential for behavior technicians.
  • KRS 319C.020(1) bars anyone from practicing or assisting in the practice of ABA unless licensed.
  • KRS 319C.020(2)(b) exempts a person implementing ABA intervention services to an immediate family member or as a supervisee.
  • A "supervisee" is a person who is not licensed but acts under the extended authority and direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst (KRS 319C.010(10)).
  • Other exemptions cover public school settings and applicable Medicaid waiver services.
  • A 2014 bill (HB 344) that would have created a registered behavior technician credential was not enacted.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Kentucky, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
