RBT requirements in Kansas

Kansas has no state credential for behavior technicians. The law defines a "line therapist" who carries out the treatment plan under the direct supervision of a licensed behavior analyst, but it creates no license or registration for line therapists and has no exemption that names technicians.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Kansas has no state credential for behavior technicians; the Applied Behavior Analysis Licensure Act (K.S.A. 65-7501 to 65-7505) licenses only behavior analysts (LBA) and assistant behavior analysts (LaBA).
  • K.S.A. 65-7502(j) defines a "line therapist" as an individual who implements specific behavioral interventions in the prescribed treatment plan under the direct supervision of a licensed behavior analyst; the Act creates no license or registration for line therapists.
  • K.S.A. 65-7503(a) lists who may practice ABA: licensed behavior analysts, supervised assistant behavior analysts, supervised trainees gaining fieldwork and licensed psychologists.
  • The exemptions in K.S.A. 65-7503(b) cover groups such as IDEA and Section 504 service providers, supervised students and autism waiver providers, but none names technicians or line therapists.
  • Licenses are issued by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Kansas, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
