RBT requirements in Arizona

Arizona does not license behavior technicians. Technicians are exempt from behavior analyst licensing when they deliver ABA under the extended authority and direction of a licensed behavior analyst, but they must use a title that shows nonprofessional status, such as "behavior technician."

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Arizona has no state credential for behavior technicians; it licenses behavior analysts only (there is no assistant behavior analyst license), through the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners.
  • A.R.S. 32-2091.08(A)(6) exempts a noncredentialed individual who delivers ABA services under the extended authority and direction of a licensed behavior analyst.
  • An exempt technician may not claim to be a professional behavior analyst and must use a title indicating nonprofessional status, such as "ABA technician", "behavior technician" or "tutor".
  • Practicing behavior analysis without a license, outside an exemption, is a class 2 misdemeanor (A.R.S. 32-2091.12).

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Arizona, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
