RBT requirements in Alaska

Alaska does not license or register behavior technicians. State law requires a license to practice behavior analysis, but it exempts people who directly implement ABA services under the direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst. An RBT working under that direction needs no separate state credential.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Alaska has no state license, registration or certification for behavior technicians; it issues only Behavior Analyst and Assistant Behavior Analyst licenses (AS 08.15 and 12 AAC 77).
  • AS 08.15.070(3) exempts an individual who directly implements ABA services under the direction of a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst.
  • The same exemption covers a family member implementing a behavior analysis plan in the home under that direction.
  • Behavior analyst licenses are issued by the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing in the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Alaska, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
