RBT supervision hours calculator

RBTs must be supervised for at least 5% of the hours they spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month. Enter your hours for the month to see the minimum and the contact rules that come with it.

The supervision rules

  • At least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month (not phone or email); the supervisor observes you with a client in at least one. Web camera or video-conference is allowed.
  • At least one of the two contacts is individual; the other may be a small group of 2-10 RBTs.
  • RBT Supervisors are BCBAs or BCaBAs; RBT Requirements Coordinators are BCBAs. Both must complete training based on the Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0).
  • Requirements must be met at each organization independently (e.g., not 3% at one and 2% at another).
  • Supervision and professional development are separate; one event cannot count as both.
  • If you are not providing services, monthly supervision is not required, but the other maintenance requirements still apply.
  • Keep supervision documentation for at least 7 years.

From the BACB RBT Handbook, pages 16 to 21. More detail in the RBT supervision guide.

Example

An RBT works 30 hours a week and provides 128 hours of services in a month. 5% of 128 is 6.4 hours, or 6 hours 24 minutes of supervision that month, delivered in at least two real-time contacts, at least one of them individual, with the supervisor observing a session with a client at least once. If the RBT also works 20 hours for a second agency, that agency's supervisor must provide 5% of those hours separately.

On the RBT exam

This calculator practises task F.3 Ongoing supervision. On the exam you get a dry-erase board but no calculator, so once you've checked a few answers here, practise doing them by hand.
