RBT application timeline calculator

The RBT application has several time limits that run from different dates. Enter whichever dates you have; the calculator shows the deadlines that follow from each, using the rules in the RBT Handbook.

The order of the steps

  1. Create your BACB portal account (your legal name must match your ID exactly).
  2. Complete the 40-hour training: at least 40 hours that meet the 2026 requirements, finished in 5 to 180 days.
  3. Pass the Initial Competency Assessment after the training, no more than 90 days before you submit the application.
  4. Pass the background and abuse registry checks and get the attestation form signed.
  5. Submit the application and pay the $65 fee. Allow two weeks for processing.
  6. Schedule with Pearson VUE ($45) and take the exam within a year of approval.

The full walk-through is in how to become an RBT.

How the days are counted

For the 40-hour training, the BACB counts both the start and end dates: a training that starts on January 1 can end no earlier than January 5 and no later than June 29. For the other limits ("no more than 180 days before", "no more than 90 days before") the calculator adds the days to your date. Leave yourself a margin rather than relying on the last possible day.
