RBT requirements in Utah

Utah has no state credential for behavior technicians. Its "registered behavior specialist" and "registered assistant behavior specialist" registrations are not technician credentials: they were limited to people working for Department of Human Services contractors on or before May 15, 2015. The law does not expressly address technicians.

The rules that affect RBTs

  • Utah has no state credential for behavior technicians.
  • The Behavior Analyst Licensing Act (Utah Code 58-61, Part 7, effective July 1, 2015) licenses behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL).
  • The "behavior specialist" and "assistant behavior specialist" registrations were limited to people employed in behavior analysis for organizations contracted with a division of the Department of Human Services on or before May 15, 2015 (58-61-702, 58-61-703).
  • Utah defines the practice of behavior analysis as "the design and evaluation of instructional and environmental modifications" (58-61-702(4)).
  • The exemptions in 58-61-707 do not name technicians, and the statute does not register technicians or expressly address them.

BACB requirements apply everywhere

Whatever the state adds, RBT certification itself is the same in every state: the 40-hour training, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB exam, and ongoing supervision of at least 5% of your service hours each month. In Utah, your supervising BCBA must also hold the state license. Your employer and the programs that pay for services, such as Medicaid or insurers, can have their own requirements too.
