RBT, BCaBA and BCBA: how the roles differ

The BACB offers three main certifications. RBTs deliver services under supervision; BCaBAs and BCBAs design and oversee them. Many behavior analysts start as RBTs: the BACB says nearly half of recently certified BCBAs and BCaBAs were RBTs when they applied.

What an RBT does

RBTs carry out the work their supervisors assign, such as conducting preference assessments, running discrete-trial teaching and other teaching procedures, collecting data and writing session notes. The supervisor decides which activities you perform and is responsible for all of your work. RBTs don't design behavior plans, decide functions or change interventions on their own: when something comes up, they seek clinical direction. Under the RBT Ethics Code, RBTs work only within a clearly defined role (standard 1.03), only after their supervisor confirms their competence (1.06), and are never their supervisor's employer (1.04).

From RBT to BCaBA or BCBA

You can accrue supervised fieldwork toward BCBA or BCaBA certification while you're an RBT, as long as you meet both your RBT maintenance requirements and the fieldwork requirements. They differ: in the BACB's comparison, RBT supervision needs 5% of hours and 2 contacts a month, while supervised fieldwork needs 5% and 4 contacts, and concentrated fieldwork 10% and 6.

  • Much RBT work is "restricted" activity (delivering services directly). For BCBA fieldwork, restricted activities can be no more than 40% of hours (60% for BCaBA); the rest must be unrestricted activities such as assessment, writing programs, analyzing data and training caregivers.
  • Some of your RBT supervision time can count toward fieldwork supervision, but probably not all.
  • Documentation is separate: fieldwork needs a summary of each supervision activity, and a supervision contract with each fieldwork supervisor.
  • Your RBT supervisor can supervise fieldwork only if they also meet the fieldwork supervisor requirements.
  • During fieldwork you follow the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts.

These figures come from a 2023 BACB article; check the current BCBA or BCaBA handbook before you plan your fieldwork, as requirements change.

Trainees and the RBT code

RBTs who are also trainees accruing fieldwork may separately contract and pay for that fieldwork supervision (standard 1.04). Paying for supervision doesn't make you the supervisor's employer.
