RBT exam results and retakes
You get a pass or fail result at the test center. If you pass, you're certified within about a day but can't practice until a supervisor adds you. If you don't, you can retake the exam up to 8 times within 12 months of your application approval.
Getting your result
The result is given at the test center as soon as you finish. The BACB can't see or download your score report: to get a copy, log in to your Pearson VUE account and choose View Score Reports.
If you pass
- Within about 24 hours, the BACB emails a certificate letter with your certification number and expiration date. RBTs don't receive a physical certificate.
- You appear on the BACB Certificant Registry within about 24 hours.
- Your certification starts as inactive. You can't practice, bill or present yourself as an RBT until your RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee in their BACB account. Until then the registry shows, in red, that you may not practice.
- From then on, keep up with supervision, the ethics code, self-reporting and recertification.
If you don't pass
- An Examination Retake Application appears in your BACB account within 48 hours. There's currently no fee for it.
- Within 48 hours of submitting it, you receive an authorization email with scheduling instructions.
- You must wait at least 7 days after your previous attempt before you retake the exam.
- Book a new appointment with Pearson VUE ($45).
You can take the exam up to 8 times in total within the 12 months after your initial application approval. If you've used all 8 attempts and there's still time left in the 12 months, you must wait until the period ends before reapplying. If the 12 months run out, you need a new application and must meet the requirements in force at that time; if your earlier training doesn't meet the 2026 requirements, that means a new 40-hour training and competency assessment.
Using the 7 days well
The exam is reported as pass or fail. Before you rebook, take a mock exam to see your scores by content area, and work through the weak-spots mode, which brings back the questions you got wrong and the tasks where you score lowest.
Appealing
You can't appeal the exam content, the questions or answers, or your result. You can appeal problems with the testing conditions, such as poor lighting, disruptive noise or long screen-load times, within 7 days of the appointment, using the BACB's Administrative Appeal Request Form.
