Immediacy

Delivering a reinforcer right after the target behavior; the shorter the delay between a response and its consequence, the more effective reinforcement usually is.

Immediacy refers to the time between a behavior and the consequence that follows it. A reinforcer delivered right after the response strengthens that response most effectively. When there is a delay, other behavior can happen in the meantime, and the reinforcer may strengthen whatever the learner was doing at the moment it arrived instead of the target behavior.

Immediacy matters most when a skill is new. During discrete-trial teaching, for example, the RBT should have the reinforcer ready so it can be delivered as soon as the correct response occurs. Praise can be given right away while the RBT reaches for an edible or toy, which helps bridge a short gap.

When delays cannot be avoided, conditioned reinforcers such as tokens or specific praise help connect the behavior to a reinforcer that comes later. Older learners with good language skills may tolerate longer delays, and some plans gradually teach the learner to wait. Changing the delay is a supervisor decision; the RBT follows the plan and keeps reinforcement as quick as the plan calls for.

Example and non-example

ExampleA child says "car" while pointing at the toy car. The RBT hands over the car immediately and says "Car! Here you go," rather than finishing a data note first.
Non-exampleA client cleans up after a work task, then argues with a peer, and only then gets the promised break. The break is delayed relative to cleaning up and arrives right after arguing, so it may strengthen arguing instead of cleaning up.

Don't confuse it with

ContingencyContingency means the reinforcer depends on the behavior; immediacy means it arrives quickly after the behavior.

  1. Question 1Why should a reinforcer be delivered immediately after the target response?

    Show answer

A: During a delay, other behavior can occur and may be reinforced instead.. Reinforcement strengthens whatever behavior it closely follows. If the reinforcer is delayed, the client may do something else in the meantime, and that other behavior may be strengthened instead of the target response.

    • B: Timing and magnitude are separate dimensions; delivering quickly does not change the amount.
    • C: Satiation depends on how much of a reinforcer the client has had, not on how quickly it is delivered.
    • D: Immediacy matters for both positive and negative reinforcement.

  2. Question 2The plan tells the RBT to use praise as a reinforcer when a young client puts on their shoes independently. Which praise statement best fits common practice for making the contingency clear?

    Show answer

B: "You put your shoes on all by yourself, nice work!". Behavior-specific praise names the behavior that earned it and is delivered right after that behavior, which makes the contingency between the response and the reinforcer clear.

    • A: General praise does not name the behavior being reinforced.
    • C: Praise at the end of the session is delayed and is not tied to the shoe behavior.
    • D: Encouragement before the task comes before the behavior, so it cannot reinforce it.

  3. Question 3A client earns a token immediately after each correct response but receives the backup reinforcer only at the end of the work period. What role does the token play?

    Show answer

D: It bridges the delay between the response and the backup reinforcer.. A key advantage of conditioned reinforcers is that they can be delivered immediately, bridging the time between the response and a backup reinforcer that comes later.

    • A: Tokens delivered after each correct response are contingent, not noncontingent.
    • B: Tokens keep their value only while they continue to be exchanged for backup reinforcers.
    • C: Tokens are conditioned reinforcers, not unconditioned ones.
